St John’s College Porter’s Lodge Refurbishment

St John’s College in Oxford wanted to enhance the arrival experience to its historic Front Quad, creating a welcoming, fully accessible Porters’ Lodge that meets modern operational needs while respecting its Grade I listed setting.

We provided a full interdisciplinary team, delivering architecture, structural engineering, building services engineering and cost management. Our role covered concept design, planning and listed building consent, detailed construction information, procurement and contract administration through to completion.

Sensitive refurbishment within a Grade I listed landmark

Located within the West Range of Front Quad at the University of Oxford, the Porters’ Lodge forms the principal entrance to St John’s College. With a clear understanding of the building’s heritage value, we reconfigured the internal layout to meet contemporary needs without compromising its historic fabric.

The works reordered existing spaces to create a new welcome area with a bespoke reception desk, meeting rooms, improved welfare facilities for porters and new secure post and student pigeonhole rooms.

The most technically and historically sensitive intervention was the new accessible entrance. Two openings within the covered passageway were adapted and formed into four centred ashlar stone arches with oak framed glazed doors, creating an entrance that fits naturally into the 15th century setting.

To maintain day-to-day operations during construction, we developed a temporary lodge so porters could continue supporting students, staff and visitors throughout the works.

Enhancing arrival and everyday experience

The completed refurbishment significantly improves first impressions of the College. The Lodge now provides a clearer, more welcoming entrance, better staff facilities and organised postal areas that support daily student life.

Quality craftsmanship was central to delivery, with local joinery and masonry specialists ensuring the new interventions sit quietly and respectfully within the historic structure. Services were threaded through carefully to improve performance while remaining discreet.

The project shows how nationally important heritage can evolve sensitively to meet contemporary needs. By combining careful conservation with thoughtful reordering, the refurbished Porters’ Lodge strengthens accessibility and supports college life in a practical, everyday way.

The scheme ensures the historic entrance to St John’s College continues to serve as a dignified, welcoming gateway, preserving its architectural legacy while making life easier for the people who use it.
