University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) needed to fully decommission the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital as part of a major redevelopment programme.

We provided specialist cost management to guide the decommissioning process, ensuring every stage was delivered safely, efficiently and within budget.

Managing a complex hospital decommissioning

We provided specialist cost management to guide the decommissioning process, ensuring every stage was delivered safely, efficiently and within budget.

Our team developed a detailed cost plan covering all required works – from hazardous waste removal to careful decontamination of the building fabric. Hospitals used for decades rarely have a simple exit plan, and this building presented hazards that needed patient, methodical handling before handover.

We oversaw the appointment of specialist contractors and stayed closely involved throughout, keeping risks controlled and costs clear, and the programme on track.

Safe, compliant and ready for handover

The building was fully decommissioned in line with the specification and handed over on time and within budget. Historic hazards were removed safely, and the site was prepared for its next chapter, allowing the Trust to proceed with the sale and continue delivering its estate strategy.

Unlocking the next phase of redevelopment

Vacant possession marked a key milestone. With the building safely decommissioned, the Trust could complete the sale and release value for reinvestment across the estate, supporting future healthcare services across London.
