To safeguard its world-renowned collection, The National Gallery needed trusted long-term support to deliver specialist projects across its Grade I listed estate.

It was important that the works didn’t disturb visitors or place artworks at risk.

Keeping projects moving in a live public setting

Since 1994, we’ve worked in partnership with The National Gallery under a long-term framework agreement, providing project and cost management, contract administration, structural engineering and principal designer services across a portfolio worth more than £10 million.

Over the years, we’ve delivered a wide range of projects. These include gallery refurbishments – such as Gallery 29 with its ornate gold leaf interior, and the 40s Room series – as well as the phased replacement of roofs with patent glazed rooflights, internal laylights and new solar shading. We also managed a £1 million upgrade to the Gallery’s CCTV and security systems, oversaw the relocation of the Artist in Residence facility and provided cost management for the Vestibule upgrade.

As the Gallery embraces digital engagement, we supported the development of Studio X, its new interactive installation.

Other work includes refurbishing the Sainsbury Wing Theatre, improving the Education Block and delivering a fast-track fit out of contractor accommodation to support future development.

Every project happens in a live public setting, so careful planning is essential. We use stringent protocols – including vibration monitoring and diamond drilling – to protect fragile building fabric and artworks. Our cost plans draw on live benchmarking, specialist heritage suppliers and a deep understanding of Grade I listed construction methods. With strong in house technical expertise, we can challenge assumptions, test solutions and secure value for the Gallery.

Upgrades without interruption

Through decades of partnership, we’ve consistently delivered high-quality work across the estate while keeping day to day operations running smoothly. Projects are completed with minimal disruption, protecting both visitor experience and the Gallery’s priceless collection.

A partnership that stands the test of time

Our long relationship with The National Gallery reflects deep knowledge of the estate, proactive stakeholder engagement and sensitivity to the challenges of working in a complex, listed setting. Our interdisciplinary expertise continues to help safeguard one of the UK’s most iconic cultural institutions, strengthening its resilience and readiness for the future.
