Cardiff and Vale College set out to transform a disused docklands site into a flagship campus that would support skills, community use and economic growth within Cardiff’s Enterprise Zone.
Designed by Sheppard Robson, the five storey, 16,000 m² campus brings together STEM laboratories, lecture theatres, hospitality facilities and flexible public spaces.
Engineering a flagship campus in the docklands
The ambition was clear: create a building that works hard for students and supports the wider area.
We provided civil and structural engineering and transport planning services. The wedge-shaped building and central atrium demanded inventive structural solutions, including cantilevered floors and roofs projecting more than 10 metres, alongside careful coordination between concrete and steel framing.
Working in BIM with Revit, we developed a coordinated digital model that enabled real-time collaboration and reduced construction risk. The sloping brownfield site and city-centre location required detailed logistics planning to manage access, sequencing and links with surrounding infrastructure.
Close coordination across the wider team ensured clear structural solutions, buildability and smooth communication from design to delivery.
Delivering a campus designed for modern learning
The £45 million development was delivered to a high standard, creating a contemporary learning environment that feels open, social and adaptable. State of the art STEM facilities sit alongside public amenities, including a spa, gym and fine dining restaurant, giving students hands-on learning and giving the community something new.
Flexible teaching and conference spaces allow the building to adapt as educational needs change.
Supporting regeneration and future opportunity
Now firmly established within Cardiff’s Enterprise Zone, the campus has become a focal point for skills, growth and community life. It supports thousands of learners each year while strengthening links between education, business and innovation.
The project shows how thoughtful engineering and coordinated delivery can turn a challenging brownfield site into a building that serves students and the wider community.

Our Cardiff team led the structural engineering on this project, tackling challenges like cantilevered floors and a mix of steel and concrete frames. Delivering these solutions on a tight city-centre site, and now seeing the campus thriving, supporting students and driving regeneration in Cardiff, is something we’re truly proud of.
