Diamond Light Source wanted to expand its campus with new assembly, storage and laboratory space – a facility that supports cutting-edge research today and adapts easily for tomorrow.
We delivered architecture, building services engineering, civil engineering and structural engineering as one joined-up team.
Interdisciplinary design and innovation
The goal was simple: create a practical, high-performance building tailored to the assembly and storage needs of the national synchrotron, while providing flexible laboratories and office space for 115 people.
The site came with challenges. We held design workshops to work through risks linked to the tight layout and nearby infrastructure. Using BIM modelling, we coordinated technical systems with care, keeping clashes off site and the design process moving.
A simple idea made a big difference: a bespoke modular partition system that met strict acoustic requirements while still allowing the building to evolve over time.
A high-performance, adaptable facility
The completed facility meets Diamond Light Source’s immediate needs and is ready for future scientific work. Modular partitions and thoughtful infrastructure planning give the building room to grow, while day-to-day operations benefit from a clean, efficient layout that works in the real world.
Enabling pioneering scientific discovery
This new building strengthens the UK’s leading synchrotron and supports the researchers who drive its science forward. By creating a flexible, high-performance space, we’ve helped Diamond Light Source continue its mission to break new ground in physics, materials science and medicine – and stay at the forefront of global research.
