Rolls-Royce needed a high-performance engineering innovation hub to consolidate teams, accelerate innovation and provide a future-proofed environment for staff and operations.

We led the interdisciplinary design from RIBA Stage 2, bringing together architecture, structural and civil engineering, building services, project management, principal designer oversight and BIM consultancy.

Interdisciplinary design and integrated delivery

Our project management team kept the building and infrastructure work moving, blending our client's processes with simple tools that kept everyone connected and working smoothly.

Weekly BIM coordination and interactive design reviews de risked the project early. They also kept stakeholders closely involved in shaping spaces designed to energise 900 staff across technical and office areas.

The architectural vision creates a grand pavilion set within open parkland. Transparent façades, vaulted ceilings and sunken plant areas blend technical functionality with daylight filled, collaborative spaces that support wellbeing and encourage interaction.

Structural strategies included repeatable cranked beams and A frames for efficiency, precast hollow core office floors and CFA piles to address variable ground conditions. Civil engineering introduced a balancing pond that manages flood risk while creating green space for staff to enjoy – boosting biodiversity and wellbeing in the process. Mechanical and electrical systems were designed for efficiency, future flexibility and long term performance.

Smart controls maximise comfort and operational efficiency, giving staff a responsive environment to work in. Principal Designer oversight and PAS 1192 compliant BIM models visualised health and safety risks clearly, aligning with CDM Regulations and Rolls-Royce’s rigorous standards.

A high-performance, future-ready hub

The completed £60 million Genesis hub brings together open plan offices, technical laboratories and collaborative spaces for 900 staff, all designed with interaction and innovation in mind. Natural light reaches all levels through rooflights and floor voids, while integrated services and smart controls support energy efficiency and long term operational performance.

Strengthening Rolls-Royce’s campus and operations

Project Genesis sets a new benchmark for modern aerospace workplaces, pairing technical precision with flexible, sustainable design. Our integrated delivery approach ensured cost certainty, programme control and strong stakeholder engagement throughout.

The hub strengthens the Derby Aerospace Campus, enabling Rolls Royce to consolidate teams, accelerate innovation and provide a future proof environment for staff and operations.
