Commercial Estates Group wanted to transform the 1970s Crescent Centre into a modern, flexible and sustainable workplace – improving comfort, performance and amenity while minimising carbon impact.

We delivered civil and structural engineering to improve the building while retaining most of its structure. A double height ground floor extension and a new rooftop plant area were added with minimal disruption, saving 3,400 tonnes of carbon and cutting upfront embodied carbon by 45%.

Engineering smart upgrades with low impact

Working with Buckley Gray Yeoman and Kier, we developed solutions that respect the conservation setting, nearby heritage assets and the mature trees along Temple Back.
Envelope upgrades included new insulation, a high performance façade and replacement windows. Inside, improvements continue through a new two storey façade, expanded ground floor amenity space, a café and three private roof terraces, including one overlooking Temple Gardens – all designed to improve the occupier experience.

Smart systems support efficient, connected operation, including a building management system, air quality monitoring, automated lighting and VRF heating and cooling.

Modern workspace, heritage location

Rebranded as Crescent, the development offers 9,385 m² of flexible workspace. Energy performance, accessibility and active travel provision support occupants, alongside a 164 space cycle park, EV charging, repairs, a gym and the city’s largest private garden.

Sustainable, inclusive space for the future

Crescent shows the strength of sustainable reuse. Achieving BREEAM Excellent and EPC A, the building is Net Zero Carbon in operation, with residual emissions offset to UKGBC guidance. Early design decisions deliver long term performance and strengthen commercial value, proving retrofit can outperform rebuild.
