Formula 1 and Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management, the team behind the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, wanted to bring more excitement to the season’s final race.

Working for Mrk1 Consulting, we reviewed the full circuit and identified the three areas that would make the greatest impact.

An interdisciplinary redesign

Our race track and civil engineers redesigned several corners to improve flow, reduce tyre wear and create more overtaking opportunities.

We delivered concept designs, FIA track design packages and schematic and detailed designs, making sure every modification met FIA Grade 1 standards. Our project management team oversaw construction, attended FIA inspections and kept the programme on track for completion ahead of the 2021 season finale.

To help teams prepare, we also created a detailed simulator model of the updated circuit for Assetto Corsa. Using our design drawings and reference photography, we recreated the new layout in full, giving drivers and engineers a chance to experience the changes before race day.

Delivering drama on the final lap

The modifications were completed in time for the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and played a direct role in one of Formula 1’s most unforgettable moments. The revised Turn 5 created the opportunity for Max Verstappen’s last lap overtake on Lewis Hamilton, sealing the championship in a corner we helped reshape.

Securing Abu Dhabi’s motorsport legacy

The changes have strengthened Abu Dhabi’s position as a global motorsport destination. The updated layout has produced more competitive, dynamic racing in the seasons since, giving drivers a layout they enjoy and fans a race that feels fresh year after year. The redesign extends the venue’s longevity and keeps the event at the forefront of the Formula 1 calendar.
