Jaguar Land Rover set out to create a 25,000 m² flagship hub for advanced acoustic testing – a facility engineered for precision and built to guarantee silence.

Appointed by JLR – and later novated to Laing O’Rourke – we led the £130 million development from concept through to completion. Delivered within a live operational campus, the brief was complex, so we focused on making coordination straightforward.

Managing complexity with clarity and control

Using a single integrated 3D Revit BIM model, we brought architecture, engineering and specialist equipment into one digital space. Issues were resolved long before they reached site. Clear sequencing, structured reporting and steady risk management kept the programme moving.

To meet the demanding acoustic standards, we designed an innovative ‘box in box’ solution. Floating concrete chambers isolate each test space while still meeting fire safety and buildability requirements – high performance without compromise.

We phased delivery of 40 highly serviced acoustic test chambers, each tailored for vehicle, powertrain or component testing. Sizes, cut off frequencies, climate control and noise criteria were all finely tuned. Extensive roof and basement plant areas support the complex MEP systems, integrated cleanly into the building.

To keep programme, acoustic and fire requirements aligned, we introduced off site prefabricated acoustic isolation systems – a UK first at this scale.

A world-class facility, built to perform

The completed a 25,000 m² NVH Centre is now one of Europe’s largest purpose built vehicle development facilities. Floating box in box chambers deliver acoustic integrity. High performance HVAC supports high velocity testing. A continuous glazed roof brings in daylight, while housing photovoltaics that contribute to sustainability goals.

Every element works hard. Technical precision meets practical delivery to create a facility that performs day in, day out.

Setting new standards for technical delivery

Now one of Europe’s largest vehicle development centres, the NVH facility sets a new benchmark for precision led delivery. Rigorous BIM coordination and close collaboration ensured its technical performance matched its ambition, without compromise.

Perhaps one of the best examples I’ve encountered of carrying out the ‘lead consultant’ role. Very impressed with the attitudes and culture in Ridge towards working in the 3D environment and BIM modelling…I would say Ridge as a practice is ahead of other consultants of any discipline, especially in the use of BIM.
