Jaguar Land Rover required a secure, low-impact distribution facility to manage more than 1,000 vehicles while extending its Solihull operations within a sensitive green belt setting.

We delivered the architectural design for a new 13ha distribution site, turning an oilseed rape field into a secure extension of Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant. Working closely with the client, local authority and main contractor, we shaped a masterplan that balances operational efficiency with the sensitivities of a green belt location.

Designing secure logistics within the green belt

The facility brings together five detached buildings and space for more than 1,000 vehicles in a clear, efficient layout. Grass embankments soften views from the surrounding countryside, while discreet security measures protect high value assets without a heavy visual presence.

A key feature is the enclosed bridge over Damson Parkway. Emerging from the tree line in timber cladding before transitioning into a 45m single span metal tube, it creates a safe, streamlined link between the two sites.

We coordinated detailed vehicle tracking to keep movements smooth across the bridge and around the site. Alongside this, we managed ecological considerations – trees, bats, drainage, lighting and noise – while meeting strict security needs.

Delivering operational efficiency with minimal visual impact

Clad in Scandinavian larch, the five buildings take cues from agricultural structures, helping them sit naturally in the landscape. Together with the bridge, they form a cohesive, low profile logistics environment that works efficiently while staying discreet.

Careful planning kept vehicle flow uninterrupted on and off Damson Parkway, boosting JLR’s distribution capacity without adding pressure to local roads.

Strengthening logistics, respecting landscape

Now complete, the £20 million facility enhances JLR’s operational resilience and capacity at Solihull. By combining secure infrastructure, intelligent vehicle flow and thoughtful landscape design, the project shows how large scale logistics can be delivered responsibly in a sensitive setting.

The result is a high performance distribution hub that boosts manufacturing efficiency while remaining firmly rooted in its rural surroundings.
