The Harris, which has stood off Preston’s Market Square for more than 130 years, has undergone a £16m regeneration project known as Harris Your Place, which will re-establish the museum, art gallery, and library as a key city centre attraction.
The Harris is being reimagined as a more cohesive, interactive space that meets the needs of today’s visitors while preserving its rich heritage. Preston city council hopes its efforts will attract 100,000 additional visitors to the city.
Our role and project challenges
We are providing Cost Management services on this project which, given the age of the building, has presented some unique challenges, including unforeseen structural issues and the discovery of more asbestos than initially expected. Additionally, the insolvency of the fit-out contractor caused delays, but the project has remained resilient, progressing faster than planned.
One unexpected but crucial challenge was addressing leaks in the museum’s steps. Historically used by the Lord Mayor for public announcements, the steps required urgent repairs due to the addition of a buggy park and other facilities beneath them.
Highlights and a lasting legacy
One of the most rewarding aspects of this project has been the restoration of the museum’s Foucault pendulum – one of only a few in the world. This delicate and intricate work is a testament to the dedication involved in preserving the museum’s historic features.
The regeneration of The Harris is more than a refurbishment – it’s been a reimagination of a key cultural venue that sits at the heart of Preston’s identity. The Harris Your Place project carefully balances heritage with community, and we’re excited to welcome our communities and visitors back to a space that truly reflects the cultural ambition of our city.

The refurbishment of The Harris began in October 2022 and is scheduled for completion this year. We’re looking forward to seeing The Harris reopen as a vibrant and engaging space that honours its past whilst embracing the future.
